Our Wines

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva is a gorgeous wine that captures the personality of this warm, radiant vintage beautifully while retaining a classic, mid-weight sense of structure.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92 pts

Do not be fooled by the whimsical classicism of the label into thinking this Greve Chianti Classico from the heart of Montefioralle will be old-schooled, rustic and ancient-styled sangiovese. It is in fact a facsimile of such a notion and in point of fact the opposite is true. The salt
and pepper seasoning of 10 per cent Merlot and five Cabernet Sauvignon are more like spice and sauce to prove the first point. The small barriques aging for 18 months is the second, acceding into a textural Riserva at once silky smooth and then oozing with vanilla, balsamic and resiny syrup. A mouthful to be sure and in the style so well made. A fun fact to know is about the Guardingo Di Passignano, a medieval road and the only passage that connected the three main valleys of the Florentine countryside; Val d’Elsa, Val di Pesa and Val di Greve

Chianti Classico DOCG

Mezzuola

The wine region of Chianti classico is renowned throughout the world for the beauty of its various landscapes and for the joy that its atmosphere and lifestyle has created for many. Our estate lies within the municipality of Greve-in-Chianti, one of the most important wine towns of the Florentine Chianti Classico. We are situated on the highest ground, close to the peak of Montefili, and look down on the hamlet of Mezzuola , the village of Montefioralle and the magnificent panorama of the valley of the Greve. The ‘Tenuta di Monte-Ficali’ estate was born from the ashes of the historic ‘Mezzuola’ estate of the Bordoni family, who had made Chianti Classico in the lands surrounding their hunting lodge since 1782. The black and gold label of our Chianti Classico pays homage to the nobility and depth of history of our world class terroir and attempts to capture the ‘zeitgeist’ of the 18th Century.

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG

Guardingo di Passignano

Our Chianti Classico riserva is made from the first selection of the grapes, the ripest and sweetest, with the promise of greatness. After fermentation these grapes will go onto age in the best quality French oak for a minimum of 18 months. This is a wine that can be cellared for 10 years, where it will go on to develop further nuance and smoothness. The name of the riserva makes reference to the ancient military road ‘Via del Guardingo di Passignano’ that passes from the Greve valley through the town of Montefioralle (a fortress village) and leads up and over the Montefili hill, passing our estate before descending into the valleys of the pesa and Elsa via the Monestary of Badia a Passignano. A ‘Guardingo’ is an early medieval Lombardian name for a military watchtower that once stood on the highground, although its actual position is lost in the sands of time.

S_Cresci_2017_20.jpg

San Cresci IGT

The most important wine of the estate. 100% Sangiovese from our oldest vineyard. Medium to full-bodied, elegant tannins and great ageing potential!

100% sangiovese

14.5% vol.

Castrum IGT

Castrum Monte-ficali was the original name of the early, medieval village which has been known as Castello di Montefioralle since the Renaissance. Our wine estate overlooks this unspoiled, ancient hamlet and our tasting rooms are situated in a walled garden within its walls. Castrum translates as fortress, and the distinct label is a play on this theme, being based on the decorative door of an eighteenth century cassaforte (safe). This wine is a blend of our Sangiovese with similar quantities of Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon cultivated at a smallholding near the monastery of Badia a Passignano. This is a fruity, spicy, medium-bodied wine, a wine which accompanies many foods wonderfully. Although Castrum is partially created with French or so-called “international” varietals, the tradition of blending these 3 grape varieties in Tuscany dates back to the 1800s, and to the excellent vineyards of Carmignano Docg, far, far before the invention of the “Supertuscan” wines.

Vino Rosato IGT

Once a rare sight in Tuscany, but now virtually a given. A lively, fruity wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes using the French ‘saignée method’ whereby the freshly harvested and lightly crushed grapes are stacked up in a vat, and after cold maceration an amount of the grape juice is run off. This delicately coloured juice then goes on to complete the winemaking process, whilst the concentrated mash that remains in the tank continues its journey to become one of our reds.

FORESTIERI-2018_19.jpg

Forestieri IGT

The name of our white wine refers to travelers from foreign climes that are now residents. In this case it is true of both the people and the grapes. It is a fruity, aromatic blend of the local grapes Trebbiano and Malvasia, that were once part of the Chianti Classico blend, and the “foreign” grapes, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc, long-time residents in Italy. It is fermented and subsequently aged in 2nd passage barriques.

Our Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Our extra virgin olive oil is made from the fruit of our olive orchards, which is harvested entirely by hand every year in early November, immediately after the grape harvest.
We have about 800 Olive trees which, in the Chianti tradition are dominated by the varietals: Moraiolo, Frantoio and Leccino. The terroir and these ‘cultivars’ give our oil its peppery, fruity and intense flavour.
